SITE DESIGN FOR LEED AND DEP STANDARDS
Frank Crabtree, PE, LEED AP, Harriman
Ann Archino Howe, PE, LEED AP, Sustainable Design Studio
Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 7:30 - 9:00 am
USM Abromson Center, Portland Campus, Room 109
For several decades, civil engineers and landscape architects have designed building sites to meet regulatory agency standards, such as those of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and local City or Town Planning Boards. Over the past few years, site designers have also been considering USGBC LEED Sustainable Site standards. How do they compare, and what practical measures can be done to meet them?
Frank is the manager of the Civil/Environmental Engineering Department of Harriman Architects & Engineers, in Auburn and Portland, Maine. Frank has 30 years experience in civil engineering, environmental storm water management design, and in managing the permitting and approval process required by state and municipal agencies. He also coordinates the US Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Certification process for Harriman’s building projects. He was the LEED coordinator for Maine's first publicly-owned, LEED certified building, the USM John Mitchell Center in Gorham, and has managed the process for many other LEED certified buildings.
Sustainable Design Studio (SDS) is a woman owned (registered DBE in Maine), green oriented, civil design firm. SDS provides the full range of site design services including site selection, layout, site/civil design, local and State permitting and site construction services. We often work as part of a larger integrated design team where our emphasis is on land and stormwater elements. Recently we have completed the site design, and managed the site design team as part of an integrated design team for the Ocean Avenue Elementary School in Portland Maine. This is a LEED registered project where construction will begin in June, 2009.
